Astral projection: the journey of the subtle body

What it is

Astral projection, also known as astral unfolding or astral travel, is the conscious separation of the subtle body from the physical body. During this process, consciousness transfers to the astral body, an energetic vehicle of higher vibration than the dense body. This separation allows the individual to perceive, move, and interact in the astral plane, an intermediate dimension between the material world and the higher spiritual planes, free from the physical limitations of time and space.

How it manifests

The phenomenon unfolds through precise physical and energetic phases: 1. **Transition state:** The person enters a state of deep relaxation, on the boundary between wakefulness and sleep. 2. **Vibrational state:** The physical body enters projective catalepsy (sleep paralysis). An intense internal vibration is experienced, sometimes accompanied by buzzing or high-pitched sounds in the ears. 3. **Separation:** The astral body detaches from the physical. This is perceived as a sensation of floating, rising, or sliding out of the physical body. 4. **Bilocation and observation:** The person experiences a double consciousness. They can see their own physical body lying in bed from an external point of view (autoscopy). 5. **Return:** The astral body returns to the physical voluntarily or abruptly, which usually causes an immediate physical jolt upon re-entering the nervous system.

Throughout the entire journey, both bodies remain united by the silver cord, an elastic and indestructible energy structure that transmits life force and ensures the return of consciousness to the physical body.

History and traditions

Astral projection is a pillar in Eastern and initiatic mysticism. In Ancient Egypt, the separation of the *Ka* (life force) and the *Ba* (soul) from the physical body during sleep and death was described. Hinduism details this process in Vedic texts through the concept of the *Pranamaya Kosha* or vital energy body.

In the 19th century, Helena Blavatsky's Theosophical Society systematized the study of the subtle planes and defined the term "astral body". In the mid-20th century, researchers such as Sylvan Muldoon and Oliver Fox published the first Western practical manuals based on their own experiences, detailing the exact mechanics of voluntary projection.

Famous cases

The case of Robert Monroe is the most documented of the 20th century. In 1958, this American radio executive began to suffer spontaneous astral unfoldings. Monroe recorded his experiences with scientific precision, describing the geography of the astral plane and encounters with other consciousnesses. His research led to the founding of the Monroe Institute and the development of Hemi-Sync audio technology to facilitate conscious projection.

Emanuel Swedenborg, an 18th-century Swedish scientist and philosopher, performed constant projections for more than two decades. In his diaries, he described with topographical precision the spiritual worlds he visited and held conversations with deceased people, providing verifiable details about their lives that he could not have known through ordinary means.

What explains it

The esoteric explanation defines the human being as a multidimensional system. The astral body vibrates at a frequency higher than matter. Upon falling asleep or entering a trance, brainwaves decrease and the cords uniting both bodies loosen, allowing the astral vehicle to attune to its own plane of existence, where thought immediately creates reality.

Neurology and psychology explain astral projection as a complex autoscopic hallucination caused by a temporary dysfunction in the temporoparietal junction of the brain. This area is responsible for integrating sensory information to create the notion of body schema and spatial location. When this integration fails due to fatigue, stress, or states of sleep paralysis, the brain projects consciousness outside the body as a sensory compensation mechanism.

Connections

Astral projection is directly linked to sleep paralysis, astral travel, near-death experiences, the subtle body, bilocation, and access to the Akashic records.
