Telepathy: the direct transmission of thought

What it is

Telepathy is the direct transmission of information, thoughts, emotions, or mental images from the mind of a sender to that of a receiver, without the use of known sensory channels, physical language, or technological signals. It is a form of extrasensory perception that operates beyond the barriers of physical space and time.

How it manifests

Telepathy manifests through different modalities of perception: * **Spontaneous or intuitive telepathy:** It occurs naturally between people with a strong emotional bond (mothers and children, twins, couples). It manifests as a sudden certainty that the other is in danger, an unexpected phone call at the exact moment one was thinking of that person, or the simultaneous adoption of the same thought without prior stimulus. * **Experimental telepathy:** It is induced under controlled conditions. The sender concentrates on a visual stimulus (such as a card or an image) and attempts to project it mentally, while the receiver, sensorially isolated, records the impressions that spontaneously enter their mind. * **Direct mental telepathy:** It consists of hearing others' thoughts as if they were an internal voice, or the conscious projection of a mental command that the receiver executes unconsciously.

History and traditions

Mental communication has been documented since antiquity as an attribute of saints, shamans, and mystics from various cultures. The term "telepathy" (from the Greek *tele*, far off, and *patheia*, feeling) was coined in 1882 by the classical scholar Frederic W. H. Myers, one of the founders of the Society for Psychical Research in London. In the 1930s, psychologist Joseph Banks Rhine began the scientific study of telepathy at Duke University. Rhine used Zener cards (a deck of 25 cards with five geometric symbols: star, cross, waves, square, and circle) to conduct strict statistical tests that demonstrated hit rates significantly higher than those explainable by mere chance.

Famous cases

The American writer and activist Upton Sinclair published the book *Mental Radio* in 1930, where he documented hundreds of telepathy experiments conducted alongside his wife, Mary Craig Sinclair. In these tests, Upton would draw a simple sketch in a closed room and his wife, in another distant room, would reproduce the drawing with astonishing accuracy, capturing subtle details, complex geometric shapes, and exact perspectives of the sender's strokes. The Ganzfeld experiments, initiated in the 1970s by parapsychologist Charles Honorton, standardized sensory isolation to study telepathy. The receiver was placed in a soundproof room, with red hemispheres over their eyes and white noise in their ears to induce a state of mild sensory deprivation. Under these conditions, receivers managed to describe and identify complex video images transmitted by a sender located in another room with a hit rate far superior to what was statistically expected.

What explains it

The esoteric explanation defines the mind not as a product locked inside the physical skull, but as an energy field that interacts with the Noosphere or universal collective mind. Minds are connected at a deep subconscious level. Through vibrational resonance, two minds tuned to the same frequency can exchange information instantaneously across the mental plane, overcoming any physical distance. The scientific explanation associates the phenomenon with cognitive bias, apophenia, and the unconscious reading of body language or microexpressions (in the case of face-to-face interactions). In situations involving distance, psychology explains it through coincidence and selective memory: people remember the occasions when they thought of someone and that person called, but they forget the thousands of times they thought of someone and there was no communication at all.

Connections

Telepathy is closely linked to clairvoyance, precognition, psychic empathy, remote viewing, and soul connection.
