Déjà vu: the illusion of repeated time

What it is

Déjà vu is a memory alteration through which a person experiences the intense conviction that a current situation, place, or conversation has already been lived exactly in the past. It is an anomaly of perception where the present experience is erroneously processed in the brain as if it were a previously stored memory, despite the individual knowing with rational certainty that it is impossible for them to have already been there or lived that experience.

How it manifests

The phenomenon occurs suddenly, lasts a few seconds, and disappears without leaving any aftereffects. The subject finds themselves performing a daily activity or having a conversation and, suddenly, the entire environment takes on an absolute and disconcerting familiarity. It is often accompanied by a feeling of short-term precognition, where the person feels they know exactly what word their interlocutor will say or what object will fall in the following seconds, even if they cannot verbalize it before it happens.

History and classification

The term déjà vu, which means "already seen" in French, was coined by the philosopher and psychic researcher Émile Boirac in 1876 in his work *The Future of Psychic Sciences*. Subsequently, psychologist and researcher Arthur Funkhouser divided the phenomenon into specific subtypes for precise study: *déjà vécu* (already lived, which implies a complete sequence of events), *déjà senti* (already felt, focused on a mental or emotional state), and *déjà visité* (already visited, referring to a geographical location).

Documented cases

* **The Case of Louis (Studied by Dr. Arthur Funkhouser):** A young man who experienced recurrent episodes of *déjà visité*. Upon traveling for the first time to a historic European town and visiting the ruins of its medieval castle, Louis knew in advance the exact layout of the passageways, the hidden rooms, and the location of architectural details that were not yet listed in the local tourist guides. * **The Case of Continuous Déjà Vu (United Kingdom, 2014):** A 23-year-old man who began suffering from constant and permanent episodes of déjà vu. He felt as though he were living in an endless time loop. He avoided watching television or reading the newspaper because he felt he already knew all the news and programs beforehand. The case was analyzed and documented in neuropsychiatric medical journals because the patient showed no brain lesions or visible epilepsy.

Explanation of the phenomenon

In the esoteric realm and spiritual research, déjà vu is the reflection of a pre-existing experience of the soul. It occurs when the physical subject aligns with an experience that their consciousness already underwent during the dream state (astral travel) or when the soul planned the roadmap of its current life before incarnating. It is also explained through the existence of past lives, where the current location evokes an identical environment from a previous incarnation, or through the theory of parallel universes, where consciousness tunes in for an instant to an alternative version of itself that has already gone through that experience.

Applied neurology explains déjà vu as a micro-delay in the transmission of sensory signals. Information received through one sensory pathway takes fractions of a millisecond longer to reach the temporal lobe than that received through another pathway. The brain processes the second signal as if it were an old memory of the first. Another accepted neuroscientific theory is that of "Gestalt familiarity," where a current environment shares an identical layout of objects with a forgotten past experience, which activates the temporal lobe's sense of familiarity without the conscious memory being able to identify the exact original recollection.

Déjà vu is closely related to precognition, astral travel, premonitory dreams, past lives, and cryptomnesia.
