Manannán mac Lir
Manannán mac Lir: The Weaver of the Ocean Mists
The Waves That Ride Like Steeds
For those who gaze at the sea from wind-swept cliffs, the ocean is a vast expanse of saltwater and danger. But for Manannán mac Lir, the son of the deep sea, the crashing waves are the manes of his herd of white horses, and the depths of the Atlantic are plains of tender grass through which he rides in his golden chariot without wetting the soles of his feet.
Manannán is the lord of the tides, the guardian of the veil that separates the mortal world from the Promised Lands of the Otherworld, known as Tír na nÓg. His figure is that of an eternal traveler, wrapped in a cloak that changes color according to the state of the sky: gray like the storm, blue like the deep water, or green like the seaweed of the coast. When he is angered, he stirs the waters, causing shipwrecks; when he is in a good mood, he clears the horizon and grants favorable winds to sailors who know his name and offer him the first drops of their drinks.
The Treasures from the Other Side of the Veil
No Celtic god possesses an arsenal of wonders as fabulous as that of Manannán. His horse, Enbarr, can run over water and land with the same speed as the wind; his ship, the *Wave Sweeper*, has no sails or oars, but instead directly obeys the thoughts of whoever pilots it. At his waist hangs the sword *Fragarach*, the "Answerer," a weapon so terrible that no armor can stop it and which forces anyone who has its blade pressed against their throat to speak the truth.
However, his most mysterious possession is his cloak of mist, the *Féth Fíada*. With it, Manannán can wrap the gods in an invisible shroud that hides them from mortal eyes, or conjure a mist so dense that it confuses enemy armies, causing them to fight each other to extinction. He is also the custodian of the crane bag, a magical bag that contains all the royal treasures of Ireland and the secrets of Ogham writing, the runes of the forest and the sea.
The Feast That Mocks Death
The most famous myth of Manannán is his role as host to the gods after the loss of their sovereignty over the earthly plane. When the Tuatha Dé Danann had to retreat before the arrival of men, Manannán guided them into the sacred hills, the *sidhe*, and toward the invisible islands of the west.
There he organized the Feast of Age, an eternal banquet where the god serves the meat of his magical pigs. These animals have the astonishing property of being slaughtered and eaten one day, only to return to life safe and sound the next day, ensuring infinite sustenance. Furthermore, the ale that Manannán serves in his cups immunizes the gods against aging, illness, and death. Thus, the lord of the sea became the bridge between the ephemeral and the eternal, the psychopomp who receives the souls of heroes and guides them through the foam toward an eternity of music, wine, and endless youth.
