Vlkodlak
Vlkodlak: The Lycanthropic Revenant of Slavic Folklore
Birth Under the Blood Moon
The *Vlkodlak* (also known as *vukodlak*, *volkodlak*, or *vourdalak* in various Slavic regions of the Balkans and Eastern Europe) represents a unique conceptual bridge between the lycanthrope and the vampire. In the Slavic worldview, these two monstrosities were not distinct species, but rather phases of the same metaphysical pathology. A *vlkodlak* is, in life, an individual prone to lupine transformation due to cosmic transgressions: having been born with a red amniotic membrane (the "caul"), having been conceived on a forbidden holy day, or having been cursed by a parent or a priest. During its earthly existence, its soul leaves the sleeping body in the form of a wolf to quench its thirst for blood and ravage herds.
Therianthropic Duality and the Eclipse
Unlike Western lycanthropes, whose transformation is usually associated exclusively with the full moon, the *vlkodlak* possesses a much darker macrocosmic connection. In medieval Slavic mythology, it was believed that *volkodlaks* were responsible for solar and lunar eclipses; ancient chronicles describe these creatures ascending to the firmament to devour the celestial luminaries in an attempt to plunge the world into primordial chaos. After physical death, the transition of the *vlkodlak* is inevitable: if the corpse is not subjected to specific prophylactic funeral rites, the spirit returns to the corrupted flesh, rising from the grave not as a flesh-and-blood wolf, but as a reanimated corpse hungry for the life force of its own relatives.
Archetype of Community Discord
Symbolically, the *vlkodlak* embodies the absolute rupture of the social fabric and the collapse of Slavic tribal solidarity (*zadruga*). It is the outcast who violates the taboos of hospitality and kinship. On the esoteric plane, it represents the persistence of the egoic will beyond death; a soul that refuses to cross the river Nav (the Slavic underworld) and prefers to devour the vitality of the living to sustain its parasitic existence. It is the embodiment of the earth's insatiable hunger during steppe winters, where the wolf and death by starvation merge into a single entity.
Methods of Purification and Exhumation
The eradication of a *vlkodlak*, especially in its post-mortem revenant phase, requires a rigorous ritual protocol documented in ecclesiastical records and Balkan folklore: - **The Hawthorn Palisade:** The suspected body must be exhumed. If it shows signs of incorruptibility (a face flushed with accumulated blood, overgrown nails, open eyes), the heart must be pierced with a stake of hawthorn (*glog*) or linden wood, trees associated with solar purification. - **Decapitation and Fire:** The head must be severed and placed between the legs or under the buttocks of the corpse to prevent the spirit from finding its way back to the nervous system. Subsequently, the body must be completely cremated, and the ashes scattered in running water. - **The Heel Tendon:** Cutting the hamstring tendons before burial prevents the creature from physically walking if it manages to reanimate inside the grave.
