Salamander: The Living Flame of the Athanor

The Body of Pure Combustion

In the hottest and most dangerous corner of the Paracelsian universe dwell the salamanders, the elementals of fire. These beings must not be associated with the small terrestrial amphibian that bears their name, except for an ancient belief that claimed this animal was capable of extinguishing flames with the coldness of its body. The true elemental salamander is a creature of pure caloric energy, a conscious manifestation of fire that not only lives within it, but *is* the fire itself. Physically, they present themselves to the human eye that dares to look at them as slender, vibrant, and shifting figures dancing in the heart of bonfires, forges, or the lava flows of volcanoes. Their outline is that of a white or golden light so intense that it hurts the retina, crowned by tongues of fire that act as hair and limbs. They lack the defined form of gnomes or the soft grace of sylphs; the salamander is pure activity, a destructive and creative dynamism all at once that consumes and regenerates itself every second. Their temperament is the most choleric, passionate, and dry of all the elemental spirits.

The Secrets of the Athanor and the Heat of the World

The mission of the salamanders is to sustain the principle of combustion and heat throughout the cosmos. Without them, the sun would cool until it became a black coal, the bowels of the earth would solidify into eternal ice, and the spark of life in animal bodies would be extinguished. They govern both the destructive fire of forest fires and the controlled fire of the *athanor*—the alchemical furnace—where initiates seek the transmutation of metals. Medieval alchemists considered the salamander their most valuable ally and, at the same time, their greatest danger. The fire of the athanor had to be kept at a constant and specific temperature so that the Great Work would not shatter into pieces. Invoking a salamander allowed this mystical heat to be regulated, but it required an iron will. If the operator showed the slightest fear, hesitation, or weakness of character, the salamander would break the protective circle and devour the laboratory in an instantaneous fire that left no ashes, but only fused and useless glass. They respect only the will that has been tempered in the very fire they inhabit.

The Indomitable Spark and the Elemental Conflict

Due to their extreme nature, salamanders are the most isolated of all the elementals. They feel a natural antipathy toward undines (the water spirits), whose contact extinguishes them, and look with disdain upon the heaviness of gnomes. Only tolerate sylphs, whose air feeds their own existence and allows them to rise toward the sky. The salamander that wishes to acquire an immortal soul through union with a human faces an almost impossible task. Its embrace is mortal to any dense body; the fire of its passion can literally consume a mortal's heart, causing devouring fevers or incurable mystical madness. Only those human beings who have purified their own physical body through extreme asceticism and have awakened the "inner fire" of the spirit can aspire to union with a salamander. When this sacred union is consummated, the mortal acquires absolute power over heat and light, and the salamander, at last, receives that small drop of immortality that allows it to survive the day when the entire universe is consumed in the great conflagration of the end of times.
