Gaap
The Prince of the South Wind and the Guide of Psychic Transitions
Origin and Legend: The Elemental King of Noon
Before his codification in the Goetic magic texts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Gaap (also known as Tap) had his roots deep in the elemental cults of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. He was the sovereign spirit of the scorching air currents of midday and the south wind, areas associated in antiquity with sudden revelation, sacred madness, and desert mirages. In the most rigorous classifications of medieval demonic magic, Gaap is not merely a duke or president, but one of the Four Kings of the Underworld, the monarch who rules the Southern region (or the West, according to the tradition of the *Lesser Key of Solomon*). He appears in grimoires when summoned in human form, leading four wise kings as if he were a guide of souls through the cosmos.
Historical Evolution: From Lord of the Elements to Master of Astral Travel
As medieval demonology merged with astromagic and theurgy, Gaap occupied a privileged place. Unlike entities summoned solely for malevolence, Gaap was credited with the ability to "transport men from one kingdom to another instantly" and to provoke both love and analytical hatred in human relationships. During the rise of occultism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Gaap's ability to transport people ceased to be interpreted literally as physical teleportation and came to be understood as mastery over the astral body, lucid dreaming, and safe passage through the subtle planes of consciousness. He became the patron of seers and of those who sought to break the barriers of time and space through mental projection.
Esoteric Significance: The Gateway Between Dimensions and Philosophical Transmutation
Esoterically, Gaap is the Archetype of the Threshold and the Navigator of the Abyss. He represents the principle that allows consciousness to detach itself from the limitations of matter and navigate the realms of the collective unconscious without losing its sanity. In working with the shadow Qabalah, Gaap is the guardian of the Dark Solar Wind: the force that dissolves mental rigidity to allow quantum leaps in perception. He is also the master of emotional alignment, capable of showing how feelings of "love" and "hate" are simply two polarities of the same energy that the magician can alter at will to free themselves from sentimental bonds.
Practice and Manifestation: Astral Projection and Mastery of the Threshold
Gaap's presence is atmospheric and subtle, often accompanied by a feeling of weightlessness, warm air currents, and a drastic change in the pressure of the ritual space.
Manifestation in the Individual: He acts by opening the inner eye (Ajna chakra). He grants sharp clairvoyance, the ability to predict movements in the material plane before they occur, and the faculty to project consciousness to distant places during states of trance or sleep.
Approach and Sovereignty: Dealing with Gaap demands a mind free of fixed dogmas and an impeccable spatial and mental orientation. The risk of working with this elemental King is psychic disorientation or the loss of earthly grounding (depersonalization). Therefore, the practitioner must approach him from an unwavering sovereignty, functioning as the motionless center of the wheel. The best protection against the volatility of Gaap's winds is an impeccable physical grounding: the earthly body must be firmly anchored to physical reality while the spirit navigates the abysses with the sovereign of the South.
