Smell of smoke without fire: what it means and what to do

The short answer

Smelling smoke, cigarettes, or something burning in a house where no one smokes and nothing is lit is one of the most common experiences people associate with the paranormal. First, you must rule out anything dangerous: a wire or an outlet that is burning. If no one else in the house smells it, it could be something with your own sense of smell, and it is worth consulting a doctor. But if you have ruled all of that out, there is a reason why in almost every culture in the world smoke and tobacco are associated with spirits: for thousands of years, smoke was the language with which the living spoke to the dead.

First, rule out the dangerous stuff

If the smell is of **burning plastic, wire, or rubber**, treat it as an electrical emergency:

- Carefully touch outlets, sockets, and plugs: if any are hot or have dark marks, cut the power from the main breaker. - Check plugged-in appliances, extension cords, chargers, and the electrical panel. - If the smell is strong, does not go away, or you see smoke, leave the house and call the fire department.

Other common causes: smoke from neighbors coming in through windows or vents, a fireplace or stove that blows smoke back inside when the wind changes, dust burning in a heater turned on for the first time in winter, or an overheating motor. A smoke detector costs very little and can save your life.

If you are the only one who smells it, in different places, and no one else perceives it, it could be what doctors call phantosmia: a "phantom" smell from your own sense of smell. It appears after a cold or a viral infection, with sinusitis or with some migraines, and more rarely due to other causes that should be ruled out with a doctor.

Smoke, the language of the dead

To understand why the smell of smoke is associated with presences, we have to look back. In almost every culture, smoke was the bridge between this world and the other, because it rises and gets lost in the air, just as souls are supposed to leave.

- The Mayans and Aztecs burned **copal** to communicate with the gods, and in Mexico it is still burned on Day of the Dead altars to guide souls back home. - The Catholic Church has used **incense** since ancient times so that prayers "rise" to heaven, and the casket is incensed at funerals. - The indigenous peoples of America used and use **tobacco** as a sacred plant: it is smoked to pray and offered to the spirits. - In Guaraní folklore, tobacco is left for the Pombero at night to keep him happy. - In Brazilian Umbanda, the spirits that manifest in mediums smoke: the pretos-velhos, spirits of elderly slaves, arrive smoking a pipe, and the caboclos and exus, a cigar. The smell of tobacco in the terreiro is the sign that the entity is present.

With that history behind it, it is not surprising that when smoke appears out of nowhere, people first think of a spirit.

Grandpa's cigarette

The most common and most beloved version of this phenomenon is not scary. It is the exact smell of the cigarette, pipe, or tobacco of someone who has already died, which suddenly appears in the house, sometimes in their armchair, sometimes on a special date, sometimes when someone in the family is going through a hard time. It is not "the smell of smoke": it is *their* smell, and whoever smells it recognizes it instantly.

Throughout Latin America and in Spain, it is taken as a visit: the loved one letting you know they are near. The same thing happens with a mother's perfume, the smell of grandpa's cologne, or that of the food grandma used to make. The sign is almost always brief, warm, and leaves a feeling of companionship, not fear.

Odor of sanctity, odor of the demon

Christian tradition distinguishes two types of smells that arrive without explanation. On one side is the **odor of sanctity**: a perfume of flowers that, according to thousands of testimonies, surrounded some saints in life and after death. The most famous case is that of Padre Pio, the 20th-century Italian friar: many people claimed to smell a perfume of roses and violets when he was near, or when they prayed to him, even miles away.

On the other side is the smell that accompanies the demonic: sulfur, rot, burning. In stories of infested houses and possessions, the smell without a source appears again and again, and it is almost always unpleasant, heavy, and comes with other things: cold, noises, discomfort.

That is, at its core, the difference that people perceive without needing it to be explained to them. The smell you recognize and that accompanies you is not the same as the acrid smell that turns your stomach and makes you want to leave the room.

What Viresh Kartik says: a single sign is not enough

In his *Manual de protección energética*, Viresh is clear: do not get paranoid over a single sign. What matters is the whole picture. A strange smell, on its own, says nothing. The signs that there is something in a house affecting those who inhabit it are these:

- You hear noises, footsteps, the feeling that someone is there. - You enter the house and feel bad, you lose your energy, you get sad or depressed for no reason. - You wake up more tired than when you went to bed, you have nightmares. - Everything gets cut off for you and goes wrong.

If the smell of smoke appears without a cause and several of these signs also occur, then it is indeed advisable to clean the house.

What to do

**1. Rule out the electrical and the physical.** Always first, without exception.

**2. If you feel it is a loved one,** you do not need to do anything other than what comes naturally to you: talk to them, thank them, light a candle for them.

**3. If the smell is heavy and comes with other signs, smoke cleansing.** With a lit charcoal and sage, rosemary, and rue, go through the whole house, especially the corners and places where little light enters. While you release the smoke, repeat with intention that every entity and every negative force leave the house. Ventilate when finished. It is the same principle as always: smoke as a bridge, but this time to clean.

**4. Ask.** If you feel a presence, ask three times, naturally and without fear: "Who are you and what do you want?". According to Viresh, entities usually withdraw.

**5. Protect yourself.** The shield, Clipeum, every night before going to sleep.

How to thoroughly clean the house, how to close mirrors, and the complete emergency protocol are in the *Manual de protección energética y ataques de entidades*.
