Smell of sulfur in the house: what it means and what to do

The short answer

A smell of sulfur or rotten eggs inside the house has, most of the time, a physical cause, and the first one that must be ruled out is the most dangerous: a gas leak. A substance with that smell, mercaptan, is purposely added to natural gas and bottled gas so that a leak is noticed immediately. If you have ruled out everything physical and the smell continues to appear, along with other signs, in esoteric tradition it is associated with the presence of very low-vibration entities.

First, rule out the physical

If you smell gas or rotten eggs suddenly and strongly: do not light a fire, do not turn lights on or off, do not use switches, open doors and windows, close the gas valve if you can do so without risk, leave the house, and call the gas company or emergencies from outside.

Viresh Kartik tells a story in his book about a night in his adolescence when, after playing the glass game (a homemade Ouija board), one of his friends went to light the fire for mate and the kitchen exploded: there was a gas leak. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The paranormal and the physical can coincide on the same night, and the physical kills first.

Other common causes of the sulfur smell:

- **Drains and dry traps:** if a sink, a shower, or a grate has not been used for a while, the water in the trap evaporates and sewer gases, which contain hydrogen sulfide, rise. - **Hot water:** in some water heaters, bacteria in the water react with the tank's anode and produce that smell only in the hot water. - **Well water** with sulfur compounds. - **Sewers, septic tanks, or a dead animal** between walls or in the ceiling.

If the smell appears only in a fixed place and always the same, it is almost certainly one of these causes. Call a gas technician or a plumber.

Why sulfur is associated with the demonic

The relationship goes back a long way. In the Bible, Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed with "brimstone and fire" (Genesis 19:24), and the final punishment of Revelation is a lake burning with fire and brimstone (Revelation 21:8). In Old English, sulfur was called *brimstone*, and "fire and brimstone" became synonymous with hell. Since then, in accounts of possessions, infested houses, and demonic apparitions, the smell of sulfur appears time and again as the signature of something that does not belong to this world.

What Viresh Kartik says: a single sign is not enough

In his *Manual de protección energética*, Viresh, who has been clearing houses and businesses for 30 years, is clear: do not get paranoid over a single sign. What matters is the whole picture. The signs that there is something in a house affecting those who inhabit it are these:

- You hear noises, footsteps, the feeling that someone is there. - You enter the house and feel bad, you lose your energy, you get sad or depressed for no reason. - You wake up more tired than when you went to bed, you have nightmares. - Everything gets cut off for you and goes wrong.

In one of the cases in the book, a house where a mother and her daughter heard footsteps at night, Viresh found a shadow-shaped entity that kept two others there, "like two dark, dense clouds, with a vibration so low" that just by being present they harmed anyone who entered.

If the smell of sulfur appears and disappears without cause, and several of these signs also occur, then it is indeed advisable to clear the house.

What to do

**1. Smoke cleansing.** It is the first clearing of an environment. With an incandescent charcoal and three plants, sage, rosemary, and rue (optionally lavender), go through the whole house, especially the corners and places where little light enters, which is where stagnant energy accumulates. While you release the smoke, repeat with intention that every entity and every negative force leave the house. Do it with the doors and windows open, or ventilate when finished.

**2. Ask.** If you feel a presence, ask three times, naturally and without fear: "Who are you and what do you want?". According to Viresh, usually the entities withdraw.

**3. Close the mirrors.** Mirrors are entry portals, especially in bedrooms.

**4. Protect yourself.** The shield, Clipeum, every night before sleeping.

How to close a mirror, how to ground the house, how to anchor the "sun of the house," and the complete emergency protocol are explained step-by-step in the *Manual de protección energética y ataques de entidades*.
