Edgar Cayce
Edgar Cayce: The Sleeping Prophet Who Read the Memories of the Universe
Edgar Cayce (1877–1945) was an American psychic who, asleep in a trance, dictated more than fourteen thousand "readings": medical diagnoses, past lives, the history of Atlantis, and prophecies about the future of the Earth. He announced that Atlantis would re-emerge near the Bahamas in 1968 or 1969 and that a shift in the planet's axis would submerge entire coastlines. They called him the "sleeping prophet," and he remains the most influential psychic of the New Age.
On October 9, 1910, *The New York Times* published an extensive article about him: a Kentucky photographer with little education who diagnosed illnesses in a trance and remembered nothing upon waking.
Cayce claimed that during his self-induced sleep, his mind detached from his body to access the Akashic Records, a mystical library on the astral plane where the complete history of all souls and the destiny of the universe are kept. Throughout his life, his visions shifted from medicine to eschatology, announcing geological cataclysms and the resurgence of lost continents.
The Trance and the Journey to the Cosmic Record
Cayce's technique was unalterable. He would lie down on a couch, fold his hands over his stomach, and enter a state of deep sleep through self-hypnosis. His wife, Gertrude, would ask the questions, while a stenographer recorded every word that came out of Cayce's mouth. Upon waking, the psychic appeared exhausted and completely unaware of what he had just dictated.
In this state, Cayce not only prescribed medical treatments that were revolutionary for the time, but also described in detail the geography of the Earth before the great floods of antiquity. He claimed that Atlantis had been a real and technologically advanced civilization that destroyed itself due to the abuse of an immense source of crystalline energy.
The Resurgence of Atlantis and the Shift of the Poles
Cayce's most shocking prophecies pointed to the physical transformation of the planet. He announced that between the years 1968 and 1969, a portion of the continent of Atlantis would re-emerge near the Bahama Islands. His description located a submerged temple whose stone structures would see the light of the sun once again after centuries beneath the ocean.
Likewise, the sleeping prophet warned of a global cataclysm caused by the shifting of the Earth's axis of rotation. According to his readings, this phenomenon would cause the collapse of the great metropolises of the East Coast of the United States, the disappearance of a large part of Japan beneath the waters of the Pacific, and the transformation of Europe's climate in a geological instant.
The Founding of a Library of Miracles
To manage the thousands of requests for help and archive the transcripts of his sessions, Cayce founded the Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach in 1931. The so-called "readings" were meticulously classified by topic, accumulating more than fourteen thousand written records covering everything from therapeutic treatments to revelations about his patients' past lives and the origin of ancient civilizations.
Scientists, doctors, and spiritual seekers flocked to Virginia Beach to study the phenomenon. Although the mainstream medicine of the time looked upon his methods with suspicion, his followers maintain that many of his diagnoses baffled the professionals who witnessed his trances.
The Bimini Stones and the Dates of the Cataclysm
In 1968, divers discovered off the coast of Bimini Island in the Bahamas an alignment of huge submerged limestone blocks that seemed to form a paved road. Cayce's followers immediately pointed out that this discovery precisely fulfilled the psychic's prediction about the resurgence of Atlantis on that exact date, although the international geological community later determined that it was a natural coastal rock formation.
On the other hand, Cayce's prediction of the great planetary cataclysm that was supposed to occur before the end of the 20th century, with the destruction of New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, did not come to pass. Cayce passed away on January 3, 1945, leaving behind a documentary legacy that remains the fundamental pillar of contemporary Western mysticism, guarded in the library that bears his name facing the Atlantic Ocean.
