Adriel: The Witness of the End of the Individual World

The Shepherd of the Hills of Ash

Adriel is the angel who observes the extinguishing of the inner stars. For every human being, their own death is the end of the entire world; all the beauty, pain, knowledge, and relationships they accumulated collapse in a single instant of darkness. Adriel is in charge of witnessing and recording this private catastrophe, ensuring that nothing of value in the soul's experience is lost in the chaos of transition.

His appearance is that of a weary yet majestic traveler, wrapped in a cloak the color of late twilight, with eyes that have seen the fall of countless empires and the extinction of billions of individual lives. He carries with him a staff of withered olive wood that, it is said, turns green for an instant every time a righteous soul crosses to the other side under his guidance. His presence does not instill panic, but rather a deep and melancholy resignation.

The Touch That Extinguishes the Lantern

When Adriel approaches the deathbed, the outside world begins to fade for the dying person. The sounds of the room transform into a distant murmur, similar to the waves of a distant sea; the light of the lamps is reduced to a golden point flickering in the immensity of the approaching night. The angel extends his hand and touches the individual's forehead with the tips of his icy fingers, a gesture known as "the extinguishing of the lantern."

This touch suspends the activity of the physical senses one by one: first taste, then sight, followed by touch and smell, leaving only hearing as the last bridge to the earth. Through that dying bridge, Adriel whispers a single word, a secret name that the soul knew before birth and had forgotten during its stay in matter. Upon hearing this name, the spirit understands that its time in the school of the world has ended and rises from its clay vessel.

The Guide Through the Paths of Oblivion

Once the soul is out of the body, Adriel does not abandon it immediately. He takes it by the hand and guides it through the desolate regions that separate the Earth's atmosphere from the higher realms, a territory that the ancients called "the hills of ash." In this transit, the soul is stalked by the echoes of its own mistakes and by parasitic entities that seek to feed on its confusion.

Adriel's staff serves here as both defense and beacon; a single strike of its wood against the ground of the path drives away the shadows and opens safe passages through the barriers of fire or ice that block the ascent. He is the psychopomp par excellence, the protector who ensures that the soul does not remain wandering on the edges of the physical plane, guaranteeing that every divine spark returns to the original fire from which it was detached.
