Mercury
Mercury: The Messenger of the Wind and the Invisible Paths
The Herald of Swift Steps
In the silence of a cave on Mount Cyllene, before the sun claimed its empire over the sky, a god was born who knew no childhood. Mercury, son of the sovereign of lightning and the nymph Maia, did not need years to learn the rules of the world; a few hours were enough for him to decipher them and, immediately, seek a way to elude them. Being barely a newborn, he escaped his cradle and stole the sacred herd of his brother Apollo, erasing the hoofprints by making the beasts walk backward. When the sun god discovered him, Mercury had already invented the lyre by stretching ox guts over a tortoise shell. With a single chord of that instrument, he appeased his brother's fury and sealed a pact of brotherhood that would last forever. That theft was not an act of malice, but the presentation of his credentials to the cosmos. Mercury was born to unite what was separated, to cross the boundaries that other gods feared to touch, and to weave bridges of words, commerce, and cunning where there was only silence or conflict.
The Lord of Borders and Commerce
Dressed in his winged sandals, the *talaria*, and crowned with the *petasus* that cuts the wind, Mercury became the breath that moves the mortal world. He is the patron of the market, the protector of merchants who risk their fortune on the roads, and the deity who watches to ensure that scales remain fair, though he always keeps a knowing wink for the clever merchant who knows how to close an advantageous deal. In his right hand he holds the caduceus, a golden staff entwined by two serpents in perfect symmetry, a gift from Apollo himself that symbolizes the balance between opposing forces. With this scepter, Mercury not only calms the disputes of men and gods, but also governs sleep and waking, closing the eyes of the weary or awakening the chosen with messages from Olympus. His presence is not limited to divine palaces or solemn altars; Mercury dwells at crossroads, in the noisy city markets, and at the blurred boundaries where the lands of men meet the unknown. Travelers raise piles of stones in his honor on difficult paths, knowing that a prayer to the god of the wind can be the difference between a prosperous journey and getting lost forever in the immensity of the routes.
The Guide of Shadows
But Mercury's power has a much quieter and more fearsome facet. He is the *psychopomp*, the only inhabitant of Olympus who can descend into the depths of the earth without losing his light or his freedom. When the last breath leaves the body of a mortal, Mercury appears at the edge of the bed. He does not do so with the violence of the sword or the cold of the grave, but with the firm hand and serene gaze of one who knows the way back. He takes the newborn shadow by the hand and guides it through the underground paths, crossing the marshes of the Styx until leaving it before the tribunal of shadows. In that realm of oblivion and ash, his golden staff shines like the last star. Mercury is the herald who unites the three worlds: the majesty of heaven, the bustle of the earth, and the eternal silence of the underworld, a god whose speed is not only physical, but the absolute capacity to be everywhere, at the origin of every journey and at the end of every destination.
