Mawu-Lisa
Mawu-Lisa: The Dual Pulse of the Cosmos
Two Faces for a Single Crown
They are not two separate gods competing for dominance, nor a single solitary entity lacking a counterpart. They are the perfect conjunction of opposites: night and day, the coolness of the moon and the fire of the sun, the creative softness of woman and the organizing rigor of man. Together they form a double-faced deity that rules the heartbeat of the universe with a perfect rhythm that never stops. Mawu is the feminine half, the queen of the night who dwells in the west. Her skin is silver like the light of the full moon; it is she who brings the coolness that allows the earth to rest after the day's work, who molds the clay to create the souls of newborns, and who sows the seeds of compassion and fertility in maternal joys. By her side, sharing the same divine breath, is Lisa, the masculine aspect, the sun king who rules from the east. His presence is golden, fiery, and stern; he is the god of physical strength, the heat that makes crops grow but can also dry up the fields if men forget justice, and the creator of the metal tools that allow agriculture and war.
The Journey Upon the Cosmic Serpent
Before creation had the shape we know today, the world was a heap of shapeless and chaotic mud, too heavy and prone to collapsing into the abyss of the primordial waters. To give it order and support, the dual deity rode on the back of the great rainbow serpent, whose body shines with every imaginable color. The serpent began to slither through the void, and as it advanced under the command of the creators, its folds carved out the valleys, river basins, and mountain slopes. To prevent the earth from sinking under its own weight, the deity ordered the serpent to coil beneath the world, biting its tail to support the weight of the entire creation upon its rings. Knowing that the heat of Lisa's sun could dry up the waters that nourish the serpent, they created the oceans to keep it cool, ensuring that the delicate balance of the cosmos would never be broken.
The Balance of Day and Night
In their worship, one cannot adore one without paying homage to the other. If only the creative moon is venerated, the earth becomes a barren and lazy swamp, devoid of the drive of work and strength. If only the fiery sun is venerated, life is scorched under the rigor of war, drought, and the excessive ambition of men. That is why their priests wear garments that combine the colors of night and midday. In the sacred temples, it is taught that the secret to a fulfilling life consists in imitating the eternal dance of these creators: working with the strength and sweat that Lisa demands during the day, using iron tools to tame the earth, and retreating at nightfall under the mantle of Mawu, surrendering to reflection, love, and the rest that restores the soul. They are the day and the night, the beginning and the end of every breath upon the earth.
