Kafziel: The Witness of the Last Winter

The Lord of the Lead Spheres

Under the cold light of Saturn, the planet that marks the outer boundary of visible time, dwells Kafziel, the angel of tears and solitude. While other messengers of death concern themselves with the exact moment of departure, he is the sovereign of the process leading up to it: old age, the wearing down of joints, the loss of affections, and the slow fading of the flame of youth. He wears heavy robes, the color of lead and damp ash, and his gait is deliberately slow, for he knows that no creature can escape the webs that time weaves around them. He is the silent witness to the winter of existence.

The Weeping Over the Hourglass

In his hands he holds an hourglass whose grains are the tears of all beings who have wept for the loss of their vigor or the death of their fellow kin. Kafziel is unique among his peers because he experiences a deep sadness for human fragility; it is said that he weeps uninterruptedly while performing his task, yet his tears are cold as hail and never halt the progress of the hourglass. He does not hasten the end, but neither does he grant a single second of respite. He is the patron of those who die in absolute solitude, of the elderly forgotten in their stone beds, and of the soldiers who draw their last breath on deserted battlefields, ensuring that no one crosses the threshold without at least one celestial tear being shed for their departure.

The Cold Peace of the Limit

He represents the spiritual value of limitation. He teaches that death is not an accident of the flesh, but a necessary wall that gives meaning to life. His presence is heralded by a sudden cold that seeps into the bones, a melancholy that empties material achievements of meaning and prepares the spirit to detach from the external world. When the last grain of sand falls in his hourglass, Kafziel extends his leaden hand and touches the sleeper's chest, stopping the heart not in anger, but with the cold and definitive peace of one who closes a book that has already been completely read.
