Brahma
Brahma: The Weaver of the Cosmic Dream
The Awakening in the Golden Yolk
Before there was an above and a below, before time had seconds to be measured, there was only an infinite and dark ocean. In the midst of that nothingness floated a golden egg, bright as a thousand suns together, suspended in the primordial void. Inside it beat the first consciousness of the universe. When the shell broke, there was no noise, but rather a sigh that expanded the limits of space. From that yolk of light emerged Brahma, the creator, with skin the color of dawn and half-closed eyes, contemplating a blank canvas that demanded to be painted.
His birth is also told in another way, in an eternal echo: a lotus flower sprouted from Vishnu's navel while he slept upon the waters of chaos, and from the open petals of that flower emerged Brahma, already an adult, already wise, carrying in his hands the instruments with which he would shape reality. He needed no tools of iron or stone; the blow of his breath and the vibration of his mind were enough to fragment unity into the infinite diversity we know today.
The Carver of the Thousand Worlds
Brahma does not rule over what already exists, but over the possibility of its existence. His power is that of pure conception. To watch over and direct his work simultaneously in all directions, he developed four heads, each oriented toward a cardinal point. From his four mouths flow uninterruptedly the Vedas, the sacred words that sustain the laws of physics, morality, and spirit. Every whisper of Brahma creates a galaxy; every blink establishes the eras through which creation will pass.
In his four hands he holds no weapons of war, but rather the symbols of his trade: a scepter in the shape of a spoon to pour the ghee of life into the fires of existence, a rosary of akshamala beads to measure time, a bowl with water from the Ganges River that purifies matter before shaping it, and the books of supreme wisdom. By his side travels Hamsa, a mystical goose capable of separating water from milk, the perfect discernment that allows the creator to choose the real from the illusory.
The Obsession of the Five Heads
There was a time when Brahma's mind was not a haven of peace, but a storm of creative desire. To aid himself in ordering the cosmos, Brahma created from his own substance a goddess of dazzling beauty, Shatarupa, she of the hundred forms. Upon seeing her, the creator became enamored with his own creation. Shatarupa, troubled by her maker's intense gaze, tried to escape his sight by moving to the left, but from Brahma's neck a second head immediately sprouted to keep watching her. She moved to the right, and a third head emerged. She retreated behind him, and a fourth head rose at the back of his neck. Finally, the goddess leaped toward the sky to flee his pursuit, and at that instant, a fifth head sprouted at the top of Brahma's skull, looking toward the zenith.
This obsession, which broke the balance of divine detachment, infuriated Shiva, the destroyer. In a burst of sacred rage, Shiva assumed his most terrible form and, with a single swipe, tore off Brahma's fifth head, punishing his pride and reminding him that the creator must be above carnal desire and possession. From that day on, Brahma was left with four faces, condemned to remember the limits of his own power.
The Forgotten Creator
Unlike other deities who receive golden temples and daily offerings from thousands of faithful, Brahma is a silent god in the geography of worship. An ancient curse, born of his lie when attempting to measure Shiva's infinite pillar of fire, deprived him of mass worship by mortals. However, his footprint is the deepest of all.
Brahma needs no altars because everything that breathes, everything that vibrates, and everything that dies is his temple. Every time an artist conceives an idea, every time a mother gives birth, and every time the universe expands into the void, it is Brahma's mind that continues to work, patiently weaving the tapestry of a reality that, when he finally closes his eyes to sleep at the end of a cosmic age, will completely dissolve to begin anew.
