Fujin
Fujin: the untamed breath of the void
The elder of the silk sack
Fujin is the wind in its purest and most unleashed state, a god who existed before the earth and sky finished separating. He was born at the dawn of time, from the breath of the great creator Izanami as she shaped the world's terrain. His appearance is that of an elderly demon with emerald-green skin, hair disheveled by the gale, and a face weathered by the freezing air currents of the north and the warm gusts of the south.
Unlike other gods who rely on forged weapons or complex tools, Fujin only needs one object: an immense silk bag that he carries on his shoulder, tied tightly at the ends. Inside this celestial canvas sack, all the winds of the universe are kept, from the gentle breezes that pollinate the spring cherry blossoms to the typhoons that lash the coasts during autumn.
The dance of destruction and purification
Fujin's power lies in the tension of his fingers as he unties the knot of his bag. When he opens just a slit in the fabric, the air escapes with a sharp hiss that sweeps the mist from the valleys and cleanses the air of the world's impurities. But when the god unties the sack completely, the void expands and the wind becomes a solid wall of invisible force capable of uprooting trees, lifting thatched roofs, and capsizing vessels on the high seas.
His relationship with Raijin, the god of thunder, is an eternal dance of rivalry and complicity. While Raijin beats his drums to herald the storm, Fujin runs by his side, pushing the black clouds and scattering the rain across the land. Although they often fight for dominance of the sky, battering each other with gusts of air and static discharges, their union is indispensable for maintaining the balance of the climate. Without Fujin's winds, storm waters would stagnate in the ocean and the inland territories would become barren deserts.
The wind that saves the empire
Fujin's deepest imprint on the memory of mortals was engraved on the western coasts, where the country's destiny was on the verge of being wiped out by colossal enemy fleets. The prayers in the temples of the winds were heard. Fujin stood on the sea cliffs, opened his great silk sack wide, and blew with the full capacity of his divine lungs.
The result was the legendary typhoon that history dubbed the divine wind. The sea waves reached the height of mountains, and the gusts of wind shattered the masts of the invading vessels, smashing them against the rocks or dragging them into the depths of the ocean. With this feat, Fujin proved that the air mortals breathe every day is also an invisible weapon, a silent guardian that stalks in the void of the sky, waiting for the command to blow to defend its home.
