Raijin
Raijin: The Drum of the Black Skies
The Roar of the Underworld
Raijin is the storm incarnate, an untamed force of nature born from the pain and decay of the mother goddess Izanami's body in Yomi. While his mother lay in the shadows of death, the deities of thunder sprouted from her chest and limbs. Raijin was the most colossal and thunderous of them all, emerging to the earth's surface with a muscular, red-skinned body, sharp claws, and a fierce face reminiscent of the beasts of the abyss.
Unlike pure celestial deities, Raijin retains the wild roughness of the earth and the underworld. He dwells in the highest layers of the storm clouds, watching the mortal world with burning eyes, waiting for the precise moment to unleash his accumulated energy. His presence is heralded by the darkening of the sun and a drastic change in air pressure that makes the hair of animals stand on end.
The Circle of Taikos and the Fertile Rain
Raijin's power is concentrated in a halo of taiko drums floating behind his back, decorated with the symbol of the *tomoe*, which represents the eternal flow of the universe. With a pair of heavy wooden or meteoric stone mallets, the god strikes the drumheads with devastating force. Each impact generates the thunder that shakes the foundations of temples and cracks mountain rocks. Lightning is the flash of his claws tearing the veil of the sky.
Although his appearance is terrifying and his wrath can pulverize entire forests with a single lightning bolt, Raijin is not an evil deity. Farmers revere him with deep gratitude, knowing that his storms bring the rain that quenches the thirst of the rice fields. There is an old belief that a field struck by Raijin's lightning will yield the most abundant harvest of the year, as the celestial fire fertilizes the damp earth. In this way, the violence of his drum is also the song that heralds life.
The Devourer of Navels and the Divine Wind
Raijin's relationship with humans is fraught with warnings and ancestral fears. One of the most widespread legends says that the thunder god has an insatiable weakness for children's navels, which he considers a spiritual delicacy that grants him vitality. For this reason, during summer storms, parents order their children to cover their bellies, teaching them to prostrate themselves before the power of the sky so as not to attract the attention of the red giant.
His most famous intervention in human history occurred when fleets of foreign invaders besieged the coasts of the archipelago. Facing the imminent fall of the defenders, Raijin rose above the clouds alongside his eternal companion, the wind god. Striking his drums with a fury never seen before, he unleashed electrical storms of such magnitude that they sank the enemy ships and scattered the remains of the fleet across the ocean. This miracle consolidated his status as one of the great guardians of the realm, the electric shield that protects the sovereignty of the islands.
